When You Have To Have The Best - You'll Be Pressed To Find Better Than These At Amazon Prices : Alpine SPR-60C 6.5" Car Audio Component System (Pair)
i tried for a month to make these speakers work on my install- i have finally replaced the drivers with "DIY" woofers and tweeters and will soon be replacing the crossover too.
it is a no win situation when you match up a woofer that is anemic at producing mid bass with a strong, overly bright, if not harsh sounding tweeter. the tweeter wins every time, especially in an upper door factory type tweeter location.
even with a decent sub-woofer, 4-channel amplifier and lots of labor and material to seal and sound deaden the doors- there was still a huge "hole" in the sound field.
a sub-woofer only plays program material in the very low frequency range- e.g. 20 to 80 hz or so. the frequencies above 80 hz and below 3000 hz are supposed to be reproduced by the component woofer. if the woofer is deficient in these frequencies, the sound field will be overly thin, or weak, especially with a dominating tweeter. even with all high pass filtering off, these speakers still had less bass than the factory speakers and the factory head unit.
the tweeters were very powerful, and actually sounded excellent with the right program material- mainly acoustic or vocals. hard rock or music with intentional distortion actually sounded irritating on these speakers. this type of music brought out the worst in their characteristics.
the final straw in the deal- which could have made the speakers somewhat tolerable if it worked- was the fact that the tweeter crossovers with the attenuation controls- made the speakers sound more distorted and more harsh if you attempted to reduce their level to come closer to the woofer's output level. setting the tweeter level at anything other than 0-reduction, e.g. setting them at -2db, -4db or -6db- resulted in some horrible audible distortion and resonance. In effect, the level control was not use-able.
these speakers were probably one of the worst purchases I have made as a consumer in a long, long time. unfortunately, there is a lot of labor involved in replacing car speakers if one were to encounter such a disappointing product.
